Education Essentials Project
Alabama ranks 47th nationwide for child well-being. Lowndes County ranks among the bottom of the state’s counties for key indicators of health, economic security, and education. It is one of the most challenging places in America for children and parents to live and to learn.
Our Educational Essentials programs help Lowndes County children and families thrive through literacy tutoring, test preparation, and parental involvement.
Retired teachers tutor students to meet state-required literacy standards so they are not held back in 3rd grade.
Our Book Buddy program for elementary school children provides a book a month and virtual reading time with adult volunteers. We aim to expand this program to middle schoolers.
Lowndes County students score among the lowest 25% of college readiness test-takers nationwide, with an average score of 14. To improve their scores, TEBI offers college readiness test preparation for 11th graders.
To encourage early literacy, our newest program will recruit teachers from Montgomery to coach parents of children from birth to age 3 to read to their children and to teach the early elements of reading to toddlers.
At the annual Elmore Bolling Legacy Luncheon honoring Lowndes County citizens and students who embody Elmore Bolling’s ideals of entrepreneurship, education, and citizenship, we award scholarships to high-achieving high school seniors.
